SUMMARY:Pioneer Presents: The environmental and economic potential of bio-based construction materials
DESCRIPTION:The built environment accounts for almost a quarter of the UK’s carbon emissions with embodied carbon from the construction and refurbishment of buildings currently making up 20% of these emissions. \nThe use of sustainably and locally sourced biobased resources such as wool\, hemp and wood as a replacement for concrete\, gypsum and fossil derived products provides a key opportunity for the industry to reduce its emissions whilst creating new market and employment opportunities. \nIn addition\, biotechnology offers several promising avenues for developing bio-based construction materials\, leveraging the unique properties and capabilities of biological systems. These construction materials offer the opportunity to lock up carbon captured from the atmosphere for relatively long periods of time. \nPurpose: Join us for this exciting workshop\, where we will discuss the exciting emerging field of bio-based construction materials\, and what is needed to accelerate the sector\, including\, infrastructure\, investment\, funding for R&D\, skills\, policy\, regulation and consumer and customer acceptance. \nAgenda: \n09:45 Coffee and registration \n10:00 Welcome \n10:05 The environmental and economic potential of circular bio-based construction materials – Dr Mark Corbett Biorenewables Development Centre \n10:30 Biotechnology for living Construction – Professor Meng Zhang and Professor Martyn Dade-Robinson\, Northumbria University \n10:50 Retrofitting for a sustainable bio-based future – Alex Sparrow\, Managing Director\, UK Hempcrete \n11:10 Building capability to process and create a range of technical bio-based & circular products – Sam Baumber\, Co-founder & Chief Operating Officer\, IndiNature \n11:30 Fire side chat: Regulation of novel bio-based construction materials – Alex Sparrow\, Managing Director\, UK Hempcrete; Sam Baumber\, Co-founder & Chief Operating Officer\, IndiNature; Dr Mike Lawrence\, Director of Research\, Natural Building Systems and Visiting Professor at University of Suffolk \n12:00 Challenges and Opportunities for bio-based materials in the construction sector -Mark Lynn\, Chair\, The Alliance for Sustainable Building Products (ASBP) \n12:30 Lunch \n13:15 Workshop: Challenges and Opportunities for Bio-based construction materials – what can we achieve in the next 24 months? \n14:45 Summary of the day and next steps \n15:00 Close \nPlease RSVP below to reserve your free place. \n

SUMMARY:Pioneer Presents: Planetary Health - Sustainable Food Systems of the Future
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this exciting Pioneer Presents event to hear from experts about their work in developing and deploying sustainable food systems. \nTo take a bite out of inequality\, health crises\, climate change\, and ecological destruction\, we need sustainable food systems. Given the global population increase\, humans have never produced or consumed as much food as we currently do. But how our modern food systems operate is killing us and our planet. We must rapidly create more sustainable food systems\, from seed to spoon. \n \n\nSustainable Food Systems of the Future \n  \nAgenda: \n09:00 Coffee and Registration\n09:30 Welcome and introduction to Pioneer Group Miranda Knaggs\, Pioneer Group\n09:45 Sustainable Agricultural Systems for the Future Professor Colin Osborne\, University of Sheffield\n10:15 Green innovation in sustainable food systems James Myatt\, Appleyard Leeds\n10:30 Role of public funding supporting Agrifood innovation Chris Danks\, Agrifood Innovation Lead\, Innovate UK\n10:50 Break\nSession One: Sustainable novel and alternative sources for nutritious desirable food\n11:20 Enabling Scale-Up of Novel Food Production Systems Jude Huggan\, CPI\n11:40 Sustainable protein ingredients for feed and food Geoff Bryant\, Calysta\n12:00 Accelerating the cultivated meat industry Ivan Wall\, Quest Meat\n12:20 Engineering Microbial Foods Rodrigo Ledesma-Amaro\, Reader in Synthetic Biology\, Imperial College London (via video)\n12:40 Power of microbes in food and feed Edward Green\, CEO\, NCIMB\n13:00 Insects as a source of alternative protein Jessica Baker\, FERA\n13:20 Lunch and Networking\nSession Two: Reducing the climate impact of food production\n14:20 Food cannot cost the Earth: reducing the impact of feeding the planet Dr Joe Bennett\, Biorenewables Development Centre\n14:40 Global nitrogen fertilizer supply chain-Emissions impact and mitigation Dr Yunhu Gao\, University of Cambridge\n15:00 Biodegradable plastics for sustainable agriculture Tony Heslop\, Sustainability Manager\, BASF\n15:20 A sustainable drop-in alternative to plastic James Nelson\, 2M and Xampla\n15:40 A circular approach towards seaweed biomaterials: exploring packaging application and by-product valorisation as food additive Mattia Parati\, Chief Scientific Officer\, FlexSea Ltd\n16:00 Networking\n17:00 Close \nVenue: Wilton Centre\nLocation: what3words: warm.royal.direct \n  \nAt Pioneer Group\, we believe in the power of innovation and collaboration\, to tackle our human and planetary health challenges. \nPioneer Presents is our inspiring new event series exploring the challenges that we\, as a life-sciences community\, strive to solve.

SUMMARY:Pioneer Presents: Planetary Health - Green Carbon for the UK Chemicals Sector
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this exciting Pioneer Presents live event to hear from experts across the UK Chemicals sector and their endeavours to become more sustainable\, through the development and deployment of renewable carbon feedstocks. \nWe live in a world driven by linear economies\, where we take resources\, make things\, consume them\, and throw them away. This way of living uses finite raw materials and produces vast waste. In contrast\, in a circular carbon economy\, things made from carbon\, such as chemicals and plastics\, are created and consumed in a way that minimises our use of virgin-fossil resources\, cuts waste and reduces carbon emissions. We must accelerate our transition to a truly circular carbon economy. \nThe chemicals and plastics sector are responsible for nearly 10% of global GHG emissions\, with the use of fossil carbon from below ground\, being the main cause of anthropogenic climate change. Reductions in the inflow of further fossil carbon from the ground into our system must be reduced as quickly as possible and by high volumes. While the UK rightly emphasises reuse and avoidance\, the chemical and material industries are essentially only possible with carbon-based feedstocks – and unlike the energy sector\, the chemicals sector cannot be “decarbonised”. Instead\, this industry must be de-fossilised. \n \n\nCircular Carbon Economy \n  \nAgenda\n09:00 Coffee and Registration\n09:30 Welcome and introduction to Pioneer Group Toby Reid\, Pioneer Group\n09:45 Alternative feedstocks for the UK chemicals industry Adrian Higson\, NNFCC\n10:15 Polymers in liquid formulations: Opportunities for a sustainable future Professor Anju Massey-Brooker\, Royal Society of Chemistry\n10:35 Green innovation in carbon technologies Ameilia Barton\, Appleyard Lees LLP\n10:50 Break\nSession One: Chemical Recycling\n11:10 Polymer recycling technology for the textiles industry Professor Du\, University of Huddersfield\n11:30 Producing renewable base chemicals while preventing the incineration of plastic waste Dr Abi Mountain\, Head of Product & Partnerships\, Itero Technologies\n11:50 Engineering Biology for reducing plastic pollution Professor Pickford\, University of Portsmouth\n12:10 Lunch and Networking\nSession Two: Carbon Capture and Utilisation\n13.00 Recycling carbon with biomanufacturing Dr Anne Delille\, PhD\, Government Grants Finance Manager\, LanzaTech\n13.20 Flue2Chem Project David Bott\, SCI\n13.40 CCU in the Northeast Process Cluster – A Hub for Industrial Symbiosis Ryan Siddall\, Head of Technical\, NEPIC\n14.00 Industrial gases for chemicals Michael Burnett\, Innovate UK Business Connect\n14:20 Break\nSession Three: Biomass for Biochemicals and Bioenergy\n15:00 A hierarchy for biomass utilisation Anna Zhenova\, Green Rose Chemistry\n15:30 Biorefineries as a hub for a de-fossilized chemical industry Chris Holt\, Ensus\n15:50 Producing Carbon-Neutral\, Renewable Chemicals From UK-Sourced Biomass Andy West\, Sonichem\n16:10 Net zero acrylics Mark Reynolds\, Mitsubishi Chemicals\n16:30 Scaling-up to create biobased value chains Dr Mark Corbett\, Director\, The Biorenewables Development Centre\n16:50 Close \n— \nVenue: Wilton Centre\nLocation: what3words: warm.royal.direct \nLunch & refreshments will be provided. \n  \nAt Pioneer Group\, we believe in the power of innovation and collaboration\, to tackle our human and planetary health challenges. \nPioneer Presents is our inspiring new event series exploring the challenges that we\, as a life-sciences community\, strive to solve.
