Bigger than us.

Our commitment to human and planetary health

Across the Pioneer community, we share an ambition to bring about positive change. As a life sciences and real estate company, we have a privileged opportunity to help address the bigger reality facing nature and society.

We recognise that climate change is an existential threat and that our sector is responsible for nearly 40% of carbon emissions. But through innovation and working together, it’s possible to tackle even the biggest challenges.

We’re proud that our real estate sustains the largest community of scientists, technologists and entrepreneurs in Europe — all focused on the health of our planet and people.

As facilitators of this work, we have a clear purpose:

Bigger than us is our mission to create, develop and operate places of work that address the bigger picture, by minimising negative environmental impacts while maximising human, societal and planetary health.

It’s a mission to create long-term value for all our stakeholders. It guides our whole way of working at Pioneer, committing us to responsible and sustainable practices — both socially and environmentally — and consistently high standards of corporate governance.

Through the environmental, social and governance choices we make, we can have a positive impact on the bigger picture

We will minimise our environmental impact by:

  • repurposing and reusing resources
  • reducing emissions
  • building to the highest standard
  • actively promoting sustainability and biodiversity

We will help people and communities to flourish by:

  • supporting medical charities and young people considering science
  • engaging with all our various stakeholders
  • Creating safe, healthy, diverse and inclusive workplaces
  • prioritising the wellbeing of everyone we work with

We will promote a culture of integrity by:

  • being open, fair and accountable
  • building strong working relationships
  • meeting our legal obligations
  • safeguarding our stakeholders’ interests
  • pursuing industry best practices

1. Sustainable places

We are working to minimise our environmental impact by repurposing and reusing resources, reducing emissions and building to the highest standards while promoting sustainability and biodiversity.

By improving the operational efficiency of our building management and infrastructure, we can reduce energy consumption and loss, while continuing to switch towards renewable sources.

Our Priorities:

#1 Retaining and repurposing existing infrastructure

Whether we are growing into new locations or expanding our existing sites, we retain and repurpose existing buildings wherever possible. This circular economy approach makes best use of existing infrastructure, materials, and embodied energy, minimizes waste generation and reduces the need for new resource extraction.

#2 Building to the highest standards for energy efficiency, conservation and emissions

In situations where our science communities have outgrown their site, and it’s necessary to build new infrastructure, we will do so to the highest industry standards possible, seeking opportunities to be sustainable and biodiverse through our building projects, and making sure we comply with all relevant environmental laws and regulations.

#3 Enhancing biodiversity and promoting healthy natural environments

We seek opportunities and support organisations that are working to protect, conserve and encourage biodiversity. Developing working environments that are closer to nature is socially responsible, helping to enhance the mental wellbeing of our communities.

#4 Promoting environmentally conscious practices in all aspects of our work

We seek opportunities to minimise our environmental impact by:
1. Conserving energy and resources through efficient practices
2. Preventing pollution and minimising waste generation
3. Promoting responsible water management and conservation
4. Pursuing opportunities and initiatives that promote sustainability and biodiversity
