Phenotypeca Ltd is a synthetic biology company combining yeast genomics technology with manufacturing expertise from the biopharmaceutical industry. Founded in 2018, with head office at BioCity Nottingham, Phenotypeca’s R&D operations are based in the University of Nottingham’s Synthetic Biology Research Centre in the Biodiscovery Institute.
We use advance breeding of genetically diverse baker’s yeast to produce up to a billion novel strains for high-throughput screening. From these we select production strains with optimal phenotypes for future biomanufacturing processes. We are currently working in three research areas:
- To optimise production processes to reduce the cost of vaccine production.
- To develop yeast strains for the manufacture of diagnostic proteins, such as SARS-CoV-2 antigens, for immunological testing.
- Developing next-generation baker’s yeast production strains for biopharmaceutical manufacturing.
